  Pleasant sometimes. Increasingly rarely.
  
  It has a real fire in winter. Unfortunately though, it does seem to attract very loud talkers who like swearing a lot while face-timing someone on their stupid phone. Maybe I have just been unlucky. At least it's not the Blacksmiths Arms, which is opposite and one of the worst pubs in town.
  
  I didn't even realise it had an outside area for about ten years, it does and it is stylish and quiet. Would have been 4 stars if not for the swearing and the TV pointlessly showing sport.
  
  I gave it another chance today, I'm sitting in it now and, sure enough, a couple over there (to my right) are talking pointlessly loudly with every other word the F word. Even he told her to stop swearing so much.
  
  Another reason for witholding a star from 4 stars: I often have to stand at an empty bar for a few minutes while the minimal bar staff attend to something for the dining area or just talk to each other.
  
  Yesterday (April, 2017) there was a vertically challenged older man with a group of friends at the bar. He was being loudly rude to the girl serving because he hadn't got his two bottles of Peroni quickly enough.
  
  'There's no need to shout at me' she rightly said.
  
  'Sorry I thought you were DEAF...'
  
  ...was his aggressively-delivered response. He looked pleased with that. Fancied himself as a micro-sized St Albans version of Paul Merton perhaps.
  
  Maybe the location, near the busy roundabout and opposite The Blacksmith's Arms just attracts pricks. Bad Feung Shui.
  
  What? Oh come on, Google it.
  
  It generally plays bloody awful music too. Usually at the wrong volume. 'Watcha Say', by Justin Derulo right now.
  
  Consequently downgrading to two stars today.
  
  You cannot say I haven't given it a chance.

  For me, its all about the steaks. I've eaten here quite a few times now, and its now my go-to place in St Albans for a tasty steak. The rest of the foods is great too though, and the service is always superb. Also has a nice wine list, and an excellent selection of beers.
